Berndtson CITYSTREETS -
Bangkok
Bangkok lies on the banks of Chao Phraya River only a few miles N from the Gulf of Thailand. Until the early twentieth century, it had myriads of canals (khlongs) drawn in the wetlands of the Chao Phraya river delta, being the 'streets' of the city. A predominant part of these artificial and natural canals have been filled in and are converted to streets, thoroughfares, and freeways (some of them on 2nd stage). Over the last few years countless skyscrapers, huge shopping malls, and luxury hotels have been raised in the city, especially on Sukhumvit Road, yet still side by side of traditional housing.
The new BTS (sky train) and MRT (Metro) aim to prevent the traffic to collapse in the streets of this bustling metropolis.
